Teen Depression

In adolescents, depressed mood is common because of the normal maturation process, the stress associated with it, the influence of sex hormones, and independence conflicts with parents (Teen Depression). Teen depression is not just something to look over. Too many teens suffer from something that can be so easily prevented. I will be talking about the causes, signs and symptoms, and ways to help teens experiencing depression.

There are multiple reasons why a teenager could be depressed. Teenage stress can increase with school work, projects, tests, drama, sports and other extra curricular activities (Hub Pages). Almost anything can add to an adolescent’s stress. Although schoolwork plays a big part in adolescent stress, other causes can include strain from decisions in which their alternatives bash heads with their own skill or areas of interest.

Signs & Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of teenage depression can be absent to almost obvious. Some symptoms are as harmless as excessive sleeping and change in eating habits. Other symptoms for teen depression are not so harmless.
“Here are more signs of depression in adolescents even though they may or may not show all signs:
Apathy, complaints of pain(including headaches, stomach aches, lower-back pain, and fatigue), difficulty concentrating, difficulty making decisions, irresponsible behavior, memory loss, weight loss/gain, rebellious behavior, sadness, anxiety, hopelessness drop in grades, withdrawal from friends(WebMD) .”

How to help

Teen depression only gets worse as time goes on. It never hurts to try and help a troubled teen. You could do as little as just tell them that you’re there for them. “The teen will also need support from family or teachers to help with any school or peer problems. Occasionally, hospitalization in a psychiatric unit may be required for teenagers with severe depression” (WebMD).

Teenage depression is a serious problem for many kids. Something so easily prevented is way too common in young adults. Adults today should make an effort to help the youth of the nation suffering from depression.
